There are several versions of Halloween in Cozumel.  As you move across Mexico, you will see several different types of celebrations. With this being said, here are few things to do in Cozumel during the Halloween season.

The traditional efforts

First of all, traditional Mexican families begin by cleaning and decorating the graves of their dear ones. They use picks, hoes and shovels to clear weeds and grass from the graves. Moving on, the graves are beautifully decorated using flowers and pine needles. Next, families set up altars for their dear ones at home. These alters are decorated wonderfully with candies, bread, flowers and fruits. Some tend to keep alcohol near the altars too!  Note that this is in preparation for the Mexican Holiday, “Day of the Dead”. Day of the Dead is Nov 2nd and is confused all too often with a Mexican Version of Halloween and a piece of advice is don’t get the two confused or compare them in front of the Locals as they are proud of their cultural traditions. So remember Day of the Dead is NOT the Mexican Version of Halloween!

Cozumel Time Change – Cozumel News

Get Ready for a Big Cozumel Time Change

Cozumel is now in its own little time zone along with the state of Quintana Roo and will now be on Eastern Standard Time!  That’s right, after years of debate a number of Hoteliers from Cozumel, Cancun and other popular tourist destinations in the Riviera Maya as well as local Government Officials finally won the vote in the Legislature to change the time for State of Quintana Roo to match Eastern Standard Time.

They have been pushing for this for years now and want this to take place so that Tourists in the area have more daylight and time to do tours and enjoy the local beaches and resorts.  Obviously it will be good for business as well as it will allow for more light for more activities.  It will take a little getting used to for Tourists as well as for locals but here it is everybody get ready for change.

A word of advice is for cruiser´s who seemingly will be the most affected by the new time in Cozumel as Ships sailing out of Florida will be the same time as local cruiseship at sunsettime so a little less confusion for them.  Despite this it doesn’t mean it will be less confusing for all Cozumel Cruiser’s as those arriving on cruises that sail out of Houston, Galveston and New Orleans which are on Central Time will now be an hour behind Cozumel time instead of being on the same schedule which is something that will definitely take some time to get accustomed.

Now to help avoid some additional confusion which has definitely been happening as it is evident on the Cozumel travel boards and forums this is not a Daylight Savings Time change.  This is a permanent change and so Cozumel in April will change their clocks ahead and additional hour so this summer will definitely be a lot brighter in Cozumel from now on.

That is the basic rundown about the new changes coming this weekend and Discover Mexico is very glad to provide you with great Cozumel Travel Tips and Cozumel News so that you can get the most out of your Cozumel Vacation.  If you are looking for great things to do in Cozumel or need a little help just comment on the post below or contact us at Discover Mexico Cozumel.
