The kitchen utensil is extremely useful when you have to grind different types of foods like plant leaves and grains. Most Mexican spices are smashed using the molcajete. According to experienced chefs, this gives Mexican dishes a unique, authentic flavor and taste. When compared against many other kitchen utensils that are meant for blending, chopping and dicing, the molcajete is different and special.

The Beginning of Molcajete Bowls

One would be astonished to note that the molcajete has a history that dates back by thousands of years. To be more precise, the cooking utensil’s name is derived from Nahuatl words that were once spoken by ancient Mexicans. This proves the role played by molcajetes in Mexican cuisine and culture.

The molcajete is one of the very few kitchen utensils made of volcanic rock. The utensil has a very rough surface that makes it ideal for blending and grinding spices of different flavors. Apart from being a tool for blending and grinding, you can use the molcajete to serve dishes too. That makes the unique kitchen utensil a multi tasker!

The Knack in Using Molcajete Bowls

It is quite interesting to note that many Mexican restaurants specialize inThings to do in Cozumel preparing dishes using the molcajete. These restaurants use the kitchen utensil with lots of care and concern. For example, the molcajete is neatly filled to the brim and transformed into many scrumptious molcajete specials. This dish is ideal for preparing different varieties of seafood, beef, sauces, pork, shrimp, cheeses, chicken, cured meats and chorizo. Apart from handpicked meat varieties, the molcajete dishes are made of tomatoes, onions and napoles (cactus leaves). In the Molcajete restaurants you will be able to choose fresh tortillas and ingredients from the stone dish. These ingredients are neatly rolled into the tortillas and served. Of course, it would be a delight to see how the dish is prepared and served in its purest and most authentic form.

Serving in Style, Serving with Taste

Food from the molcajete bowl can be heated in a steaming hot oven. Moving on, the warm dishes are placed on traditional wooden trivets and served heartfully. Food on the wooden trivet stays fresh for a very long time. This is because molcajete bowls are designed to retain heat.

Cozumel Travel Tips

Cozumel Travel Tips

When you are planning your vacation to Cozumel, Mexico, or somewhere else in the Riviera Maya there are many things that come to mind. I am sure I am not the only one that has a mental picture of long white sandy beaches and laying out on one of those beautiful beaches being treated like royalty. There are other things that may come to mind as well like: tequila, margaritas, Scuba Diving in Cozumel, Snorkeling, Mayan Ruins and many other things that may come to mind. All that is great and they are definitely things to consider when planning a Cozumel Snorkelvacation to one of the best vacation spots in Mexico. There are some things that aren´t always considered or are feared just from hearing the word MEXICO! Let’s look at some quick pointers that I have for you to help you have a better vacation while in Cozumel Mexico or the Riviera Maya.

Question #1 How safe is Cozumel?

This is probably one of the most common misconceptions that I come across when I am talking with tourists. I meet them early on in their day on the island and they ask me, “Is it safe to walk around here?” That’s when I feel the need to explain in great detail how safe Cozumel really is and how it’s no doubt the safest place in all of Mexico. (I have been to many parts of Mexico and never really had any trouble anywhere but I don´t stick out as much as some people)

The truth is that Cozumel is very safe even safer than most places in the US. Remember I am a gringo and have lived in both places for extended periods of time. The thing about Cozumel is that the locals understand how important tourists are to the area and everyone wants visitors to have the absolute best time. They generally aren´t out to scam you and try to make sure that the shady stuff that goes on in border towns doesn´t happen in Cozumel.

Question #2 Do they take dollars and are they going to rip me off?

This is something that some people forget when coming to Cozumel or the Riviera Maya. Yes pretty much every shop or store on Cozumel or throughout the Riviera Maya in fact normally do take dollars and US credit cards. This being said no they are not usually looking to feed on plaza-del-soltourists and take them for every penny despite what some people think. Do you need to know how to haggle yes in some stores definitely but not in all stores as some places just have set prices and some are owned by US companies that will not haggle with you.

Can people be ripped off? Yes of course it happens everywhere but in my experiences at least I have seen it happen far more often in the US. There are people working scams all the time in the US but for the most part that’s not what people want happening here in Cozumel because believe it or not they LOVE YOU! They want your business and want to avoid anything that will give the island a bad rep which is something they understand better here in Cozumel than anywhere else that I have ever been! (This even considering that I grew up in a tourist town and we didn´t love tourists as much as they do in Cozumel, Mexico).

There are many many more things that I could touch on but I want to keep it short as I see that I failed on doing just that. With all that said Cozumel Mexico and the Riviera Maya are home to a 4great many wonders and you won´t get bored there are plenty of great Cozumel Activities and Cozumel Cultural parks and other things to do for you and your family. However remember to be courteous as it goes a long way and I promise that if you are courteous and thankful you will have a great opportunity to make friends on the island who if you´re cool will be happy to give you pointers and great deals on future visits, because that’s just how awesome the locals are in the area!
