Are you planning on a Cozumel tour during the Holy week? Semana Santa alias Holy Week is a very important religious celebration in the country. It is a time when several thousand people flock into Cozumel. The Holy Week follows many other observances like Carnaval and Lent. It begins on Palm Sunday or Domingo de Ramos. With more than 80% Catholics in the country, Holy Week in Mexico is observed with care. In most parts of Mexico, you will come across Churches that weave palm leaves in different patterns. These palms are blessed and carried around the town in small processions. Apart from palm leaves, some people carry chamomile and rosemary too.

Remember Remember! Cozumel Travel Tips

HOLA! Welcome to our Cozumel Travel Guide where we talk about different topics on interest for those Cozumel travel enthusiasts.  We touch on different topics from great Cozumel Tours, Cozumel Travel Tips and some times even a little historical information to bring you an even greater understanding and appreciation for the Mexican Culture.  So this time around on our Cozumel Travel Tips we are going to educate everyone a little bit about 2 of the most important Mexican Holidays.  Both have already past for the year but they are important and believe me if you know the difference between the two and know the history behind them then you will definitely feel closer to your friends in Cozumel.

The Difference between September 16 and November 20 in Mexican History

I have spoken with A LOT of Cozumel Travelers and sometimes things can be confusing especially since sometimes travel coincides with holidays that you are not accustomed or are foreign to you as a non citizen and traveler.  A lot of people tend to confuse September 15 and November 20 in Mexico! Well, if you are aware of the Mexican history, you will understand that these are two different days with great significance.

September 16

Mexican Independence Day!

September 16 represents Mexican Independence Day. Things to do in CozumelIt is extremely famous for the Cry of Dolores. This was when the Mexican war of Independence began by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The event was triggered by Costilla (a Roman Catholic priest) and its anniversary was celebrated since October 1825. So, what did Costilla do? How did Mexico attain independence?

Father of His Country!

Mexican independence is a strategic revolt against the strong Spanish government. This was when Costilla and few other criollos pulled together a clean plan against the ruling government. Though the former royal officer (Augustin de Iturbide) played a major role in achieving independence, the credit was given to Hidalgo. He was recognized as the “Father of his Country”. As Mexico received independence on September 16, no one clearly knows what the “Father of his Country” said. However, history declares this as a very important speech that can move your hearts and minds. Moving on, September 16 has mythical importance too. That is why the day is celebrated with bells and shouts.

November 20

Revolution Day

Cozumel Cultural EventsOn the other hand, November 20 in Mexico is the revolution Day. It is a public holiday that introduced bank holidays and long weekends in 2006. The revolution day marks the anniversary of the commencement of the 1910 to 1917 revolution. It is especially dedicated to the call of Francisco I’s arms! The event signifies how Madero unseated the powerful Porfirio Diaz, who rule for nearly three long decades.

The Controversies

It is quite impressive to note that November 20 is known for its controversies and criticisms. There have being plenty of disagreements on how significant the day is. Most of these views are strongly influenced by critical political views. The day has not being seen as the same thing for many years. Unfortunately, the failure and success of these arguments are yet to be understood and settled.

Here is a quick overview through one of the most famous statements of disagreement:

Some people questions if the birth of an independent nation is extremely important after three hundred years of stern colonial rule. After all, the 1910-1917 Rule resulted in a much more complex situation – The Promulgation of the 1917 Constitution.

So with that we hope that you will have a great understanding and appreciation for all your friends in Cozumel.  Make sure to come visit us at Discover Mexico for the best Cozumel Cultural Tours and experiences!

The Best Climate

According to Heather Wurtele, Cozumel has the world’s best climate for Ironman. Everything you want to give a tough competition to your opponents is here on this beautiful Caribbean island. That is why you should handpick Cozumel, if you are set on experiencing your first Iron Man Competition. Of course, there will be times when you might find skiing and playing in snow much more fascinating but if you are planning your vacation to a warmer climate during the winter season this might be a great excuse to participate in the Iron Man and test yourself.

How to Master the Competition?

Iron Man Cozumel 2015Iron Man Cozumel follows a fine-tuned racing format. You will be astonished to note that the strategic format will push you forward and make sure you have a stunning race experience. Most participants admire the idea of practicing at super high speeds. However, the situation goes to a whole new level if you should race for three consecutive days. The process involves plenty of bike mounts, swim entrances, swim exits and transitions, so, you must be mentally prepared to face those challenges head on. To enjoy a great Iron Man Cozumel, you should engage in frequent training sessions and intense mental preparation.

Know Your Arena

In order to be a great participant during the Iron Man Cozumel weekend, you should practice on the actual grounds.  Many participants come to Cozumel with a week or more ahead of the Iron Man Cozumel to get to know the terrain. This is because no two iron man grounds can be the same. Some can be super calm, whereas others can be extremely windy. In order to enjoy a balanced Iron Man Weekend, you should be prepared to face such conditions. That is why participants are advised to practice on the Cozumel course. Early practice with the right kind of traits will have a definite influence on how you compete and how well you do in the race. Meanwhile, bear in mind that Iron Man Cozumel depends on the climate. This is an influential factor that can have a mighty impact on your overall Iron Man experience.  Anyone that has been to Cozumel knows that rainstorms can pop up on you unexpectedly so get ready to push your limits and come enjoy the Iron Man in Cozumel 2015!

Cozumel Turtle Rescue and Release

If you happen to be looking for something to do in Cozumel that isn’t quite so publicized or typical then helping out with the Turtle rescue and release programCozumel Toursaa might just be something out of this world for you!  I am speaking from experience I have done this a few times and even taken my small children to participate after I had experienced it and loved it, trust me this is definitely a great Cozumel Familiy Activity!  The Sea Turtles begin to arrive in May on the Cozumel beaches on the east side of the island to lay their eggs in huge nests that they dig in the sand.  The Turtle federation here on the island marks each nests and counts them on a daily basis until and after the eggs hatch.  Now this starts in May but runs all the way through September and even some in October!  So there is plenty of time to plan your Cozumel vacation and add this to your do list.  You can meet the volunteers on the other side of the island, follow them over there or get in touch and ride out there with them.  I’ll put a link with their info at the end of the article.

What you will get to do on this valiant experience is enriching as you volunteer and help check and monitor nests along with professionals from the federation.  You will help count eggs and track how many hatch and even how many survive.  If you volunteer during the earlier months you may even be going late late late at night to count eggs.  If you go during the latter part of the season you may get lucky enough to dig out the baby turtles as they hatch, count them and then let them walk out to the water on their own.  It’s really quite an experience and something that is a worthy cause and just fun.

Swim with the biggest FISH in the world

If you haven’t heard about this yet then you might be missing out on a once in a lifetime experience!  June, July and August are the season for the annual Cozumel ToursWhale Shark Migrations!  Now this tour is not here on the island but Cozumel is awesome and not far from the sites where this Gentle Giants migrate each year.  This Cozumel tour can be taken from Cozumel by either booking a tour to take you their or going directly to Holbox island, which is located on the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula or you can travel to Isla Mujeres which is right by Cancun.  It’s definitely a day trip but the experience of being able to get in the water and snorkel alongside these gentle giants is unforgettable.

The whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and migrate through the area during these months in groups as they feed.  The whale sharks are curious creatures and are known to spend time in an area with swimmers if they are curious and in a playful mood.  This said you should not touch the sharks on tours as they are protected.  If you are adventurous then jsut go straight to the island on your own and hire a boat for the day.  The other way is to book a tour with a company that will usually include lunch and transportation to and from the snorkel areas.

Annual Mayan Canoe Crossing – Cozumel Events

As most people know Cozumel is in Mexico but it is also directly in the heart of not just Mexican culture but also Mayan Culture.  The island of Cozumel was a very important place in ancient Mayan culture.  This is just one of many other great reasons that planning a vacation to Cozumel means that you will be having a very diverse experience during your Cozumel Vacation.  Now we are going to touch a little bit more on the Mayan culture in Cozumel and in particular about one of the coolest events in Cozumel that takes place annually.  The Sacred Mayan Journey or Traviesa Maya just went down!

Cozumel – Ancient Sacred Mayan Journey??

As Cozumel is rich with Mayan culture catching a traditional Mayan event while you are here in Cozumel is just a great plus during your Cozumel Vacation. Things to do in Cozumel The Sacred Mayan Journey is an annual event here in Cozumel and the Riviera Maya.  This event follows the traditional Mayan sea route that the Mayans would use in their journey from Pole (Xcaret) to Cuzamil (Cozumel).  Mayans crossed the caribbean channel from Pole to Cuzamil in large canoes.  The reason for their journey was to honor the Goddess Ixchel who was the Mayan Goddess of fertility.  Cozumel was dedicated to the Goddess Ixchel.  This Traviesa Maya is a tradition that dates from 1250 -1519 AD.  In this tradition the Mayans would make their pilgrimage to the island of Cozumel where they would make offerings to Ixchel and also to receive divine messages for their communities.

Sacred Mayan Journey in the present

The Sacred Mayan journey as I had mentioned earlier lasted from 1250-1519 AD so it did stop for half a century.  Nine years ago a cultural group Experiences Xcaret brought back this sacred Mayan Tradition as a way to strengthen locals cultural identity as well as allowing tourists and non Mayans learn more about the wonderful heritage of the Mayans.  This ritual accurately follows the traditional dances, rituales and even the types of canoes used.

Participants in the Sacred Mayan Journey begin to train for the Cozumel Event up to 6 months in advance.  This is a very hard crossing and I know oarsemen that train for this until 3amCozumel Cultural Events when they are preparing for this very unique event.  Once this Cozumel event begins over in Xcaret guests participate in rituals and dances that last the entire night.  At first light the participants then take the canoes and row across the ocean to Cozumel where offerings are made to the Goddess Ixchel who then sends messages back to the mainland.  The participants then return to the mainland in Playa del Carmen with tokens from the Mayan Goddess.  The tokens are omens of good fortune.

This is a very unique Cozumel Cultural event and it very important to the local Mayans. So if you are looking for a unique Cozumel Cultural Event don’t miss out on the Sacred Mayan Journey.  Contact us at Discover Mexico Cozumel for more great things to do in Cozumel.
