Alebrijes – Mexican Culture

If you are still trying to figure our what Alebrijes are then don’t worry I’ll explain. Alebrijes are brightly colored spanish folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures.  Use of the term, “Alebrijes” and the very first alebrijes originated in Oaxaca Mexico with Pedro Linares who was a Mexican Artisan in the 1930s. Linares at one time became very ill and bed ridden.  Linares was unconscious and dreamed of a strange forestlike place in which he saw ,trees, animals rocks and clouds that suddenly began to transform into strange animals that he had never seen before.  He saw animals such as a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with the horns of a bull, a lion with an eagle head, aof which all of them shouted one word, “Alebrijes”. After recovering he began to recreate the creatures that he had seen in his dream, creating sculptures of them in cardboard and papier-mâché and he called them Alebrijes.

Well now you know a little bit more about our beautiful culture and Alebrijes. Now regarding the Alebrije Market tomorrow, we will be working with more than 15 local artisans and farmers with a variety of items from which we can learn and obtain a new vision within our heritage. And most importantly we are proud to support these local talents who with natural resources have created wonderful things, products for the benefit of our health, creative items, unique pieces of art and knowledge, all of whom want to share the benefit of these products to us and the environment at no cost. I don’t know about everybody else but March is definitely one of my favorite months in the year!  There is so much going on everywhere it seems and well here in Cozumel that is no exception.  Whats going on in March in Cozumel well besides it being the busiest month of the year for everyone here on the island for families it means some time for a quick family vacation to Cozumel.  While this holds true it is especially a great month for College students.  For me there were always 2 things happening in March that were something that I always looked forward to and still do, March Madness and Spring Break!

Even if you aren’t a big basketball fan if you are a college student there is a good chance you have some school spirit,(also its a good reason to party) and due to this March Madness has become one of the most watched sporting events on TV.  Especially the Final Four and the NCAA Championship game which may even be more watched than the Super Bowl.  Now Spring break or better yet Spring Break in Cozumel doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to forget your school spirit or miss out on the games.  One of the great things about Cozumel(well for me anyway) is that due to mass amount of tourism and all the revenue that it generates the locals understand that the tourists want to visit without missing out on some things from home.  This being the case the are plenty of great places to catch the fun and excitement of March Madness.  Some of these include: Margaritaville, the new Hooters, The French Quarter, Hard Rock Cafe and many other great places to catch the game.  Those will definitely be lively and fun so if you need to catch a game or some games during March Madness they will definitely be places to see the game.
